New Job, New State, No More Instagram: My Summer of Change

The Creative Recharge by Treehouse Annex
Hello hello!
I'm taking another break from Instagram. Here's why...
I started a new job. It’s part-time for now, allowing me to ease into working on a new team. There’s still enough to overwhelm my brain—onboarding, program information and strategy, so many new names to remember, and wondering how I want to show up in this new workplace.
On top of that, we're in the midst of a major transition: We're moving halfway across the country! (More on that in our latest blog post.)
Embracing my lifelong commitment to creativity
I don’t want to welcome another bout of exhaustion and overwhelm. Consulting and running Treehouse Annex are still on my plate, and it is starting to overflow.
I’ve decided that my now-limited time is better spent creating. Naturally, I deactivated both of my Instagram accounts to take a hiatus without temptation. There are hundreds of photos waiting to be reviewed and edited, half a dozen videos waiting for final edits, and a notebook overflowing with ideas. While informative, Instagram wasn’t giving me the mental space I needed to create. Or to be honest, feel fully in my body.
Even when I wasn’t scrolling, I could feel myself spending more time in my head, not processing anything, just retreating—in defeat than anything else. Fortunately, I caught on quickly and realized that it was my way of trying to cope with exhaustion.
Does that mean I am getting better at listening to my body? Yes, and I just know that feeling exhausted mentally and emotionally can cause detrimental physical effects.
As a chronically online person, I fear missing out, but I also fear not giving my body what it needs to rejuvenate.
While I am taking time away from Instagram, I still want to stay informed and inspired. Instead of scrolling, I do the following instead 1) read newsletters from individuals and organizations I want to keep up with, 2) visit websites to get information direct from the source, 3) write down what I want to research when I have more free time. Real free time, not time that I'm using to avoid boredom or -gasp- processing.
I know I'm not alone in the doomscroling struggle. We all face moments of overwhelm, exhaustion, and FOMO. So, I'd love to hear from you: When was the last time you let yourself miss out? How did it feel? What did you gain for yourself?
Until next time,
Keisa
P.S. Hit reply and share your FOMO experiences. I can't wait to hear from you!
